Insight — The advertised price is rarely what you pay. Sales tax plus registration, title and doc fees commonly add 8–12% on top. Negotiate the doc fee where it isn't capped, and always agree on the out-the-door number, not the sticker.

Good to know

Clear, practical answers about the car tax & fees calculator.

What fees are added on top of a car's price?

Beyond sales tax, expect registration and title fees and a dealer documentation (doc) fee. Some dealers also add optional add-ons — those are negotiable and not included in this base estimate.

Is sales tax charged on the price after my trade-in?

In most US states, yes — sales tax applies to the price minus your trade-in value, which can save hundreds. A few states tax the full price; this calculator uses the price-minus-trade-in method by default.

What is a doc fee and can I negotiate it?

A doc fee covers the dealer's paperwork processing. Some states cap it; where it isn't capped it can run several hundred dollars and is often negotiable. Always compare the full out-the-door price between dealers.
